NEVADA – VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK

Notes: Located not too far from the small town of Overton, northeast of Las Vegas, this park is aptly named. The fiery orangish-red rock makes the temperatures of this desert area seem even hotter than they already are. However, with some common sense precautions, Valley of Fire can be a place that is well worth spending some time at (although I recommend avoiding the summer months). Don’t stop only at the named features. This is a place where you may want to get out of your car and do some roaming, albeit with care. By all means, drive the Scenic Loop Road, including the unpaved portion. White Domes Road is also very scenic. If you are up for a hike, take the 1.5-mile (roundtrip) trail to Fire Wave. This trail begins across White Domes Road from Parking Lot #3. Three of the precautions I referenced earlier: (1) Stay hydrated with water. (2) Use sunscreen. (3) Wear a hat. An admission fee is charged for entrance into the park.
