Cold. Wet. Windy. Perfect?

Haystack Rock - Cannon Beach, Oregon

Several years ago, my wife and I were visiting the northern part of the Oregon coast. In one of the many souvenir shops tucked into the nooks and crannies of that area, my wife saw a T-shirt with these words boldly displayed on the front:

Cold Wet Windy
Perfect

The first three words accurately described the conditions we were experiencing then. It may have been “Perfect” for surfers in their insulated drysuits, but we would not have applied this adjective to that particular vacation day.

However, that does bring to mind a number of photographs I’ve taken under less than perfect conditions.

This shot was taken early one very cold morning. Even with wool gloves on, my fingertips became so cold
that I had to look down at my camera to make sure my finger was on the shutter button before I pressed down:

Clouds, early morning light - Yavapai Point, Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim), Arizona

The image below was shot at an elevation of 12,000 feet while it was raining:

Paintbrush - Governor Basin, Uncompahgre National Forest, Colorado

When taking this photograph, the wind was blowing so hard I had to hold onto my tripod to keep it from falling over:

Crepuscular rays - from the summit of Black Balsam Knob, Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina

During his time on earth, things were not always perfect for the one Person who lived a perfect life: Jesus Christ. But Jesus, with his Father’s help, persevered. And that is what I should do as well.
