When I take a photograph – an image – it is a representation of what I saw and experienced in nature. For example –

the intricate detail in a wildflower bloom:

Dwarf crested iris - Bud Ogle Place, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

the dazzling colors of a butterfly:

Green birdwing butterfly (male) - Butterfly Rainforest, Florida Museum of Natural History, Gainesville, Florida

a mountain soaring into the sky:

Heavens Peak - Glacier National Park, Montana

a river marching downstream, passing in review by trees dressed in their fall finery:

Middle Saluda River, fall colors - Jones Gap State Park, South Carolina

Looking at an image is certainly not the same as seeing the subject in person. But sometimes, it has to do. There are folks who, for one reason or another, are not able to go out and experience nature for themselves. A number of people in this situation have told me they travel through my photos. Therefore, any image I show other people needs to accurately represent the original.

So God created man in his own image
– Genesis 1:27a (NIV)

That God created me in His image is both amazing and scary. Of course, there are attributes of God I do not have: His ability to transcend space and time and His power, for example. But, as a Christian, there are other aspects of God’s character and nature that should be a part of who I am. Love, forgiveness, and mercy are three that come immediately to mind. This is important so that other people, especially those who don’t know God, might get a glimpse – an image – of what He is like.
