Dressed for Success

When I go out to photograph nature, I need a number of things including camera body and lenses, memory cards, and tripod. Another requirement, perhaps less obvious but no less essential, is the right clothing.

Jeans are a basic necessity for me. Whether I’m walking through vegetation or kneeling down on the ground, denim provides the durability I need. I will also wear a hat, either one with a floppy brim during warm weather or a knit cap when the thermometer struggles to get above freezing. The coolness of autumn or the more bracing chill of winter can mean I add anything from a light jacket to a substantial coat. And if the outside air is really frigid, I will put on wool mittens to enable my occasionally numb fingers to operate my camera.

In the third chapter of Colossians, Paul provides a list of clothing I need for my journey of faith.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved,
clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility,
gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and
forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.
Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
And over all these virtues put on love,
which binds them all together in perfect unity.

– Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)

It is clear that Paul is writing about clothes for the soul. As a believer, I need to put on the Pants of Patience, a Hat of Humility, my Coat of Compassion, and the Gloves of Gentleness. All of these items should be constructed from the Fabric of Forgiveness and which are Knitted with Kindness. And onto each of them should be sown the Label of Love.

Having on appropriate outerwear helps me make the most of the opportunities I have as a nature photographer. Having on appropriate “innerwear” helps me make the most of the opportunities I have as a Christian.
