UTAH – GRAND COUNTY – La Sal Loop Scenic Drive
Notes: If you visit Arches National Park, it is hard to miss the rugged, often snow-capped peaks to the southeast. The La Sal Loop Scenic Drive will allow you to get up close and personal with these beautiful mountains. Since only about half this drive is located in the Manti-La Sal National Forest, I’ve opted for the broader location of Grand County. If possible, begin your exploration in late morning or early afternoon, which will allow you to view the La Sals in afternoon light (rather than seeing them in shadow). I also recommend driving this route in a counterclockwise direction for optimal light on Castle Valley at the northern end of the drive. (More details on this area momentarily.) To begin the loop, head south out of Moab on US 191 for a little less than 8 miles. Turn left on Old Airport Road. At the T-intersection, turn right. Then, you’re on your way. This two-lane paved road weaves its way through the forested mountain slopes, eventually passing over 8,000 feet, and includes a large scenic overlook of the valley below. After exiting the National Forest towards the northwest, the road will descend to Castle Valley. This area’s red rock spires and mesas soaring towards the sky are worth spending time viewing the scenery. When you arrive at the T-intersection with Utah 128, turn left to return to Moab. (See the Favorite Places entry for “GRAND COUNTY – Utah 128” for more information on that road.)
