UTAH – GRAND STAIRCASE-ESCALANTE NATIONAL MONUMENT – Devils Garden

Notes: Twenty-plus years ago, this spot was not particularly well-known. On our first trip here, my wife and I pretty much had the place to ourselves. That would be quite rare now. To get to Devils Garden, drive 12-or-so miles down Hole-in-the-Rock Road, which veers off Utah 12 just north of the town of Escalante. The increased volume of vehicles on this sand-and-gravel road has created a washboard surface in places which can result in a teeth-rattling ride. Taking it slow and easy in these areas will get you there with all of your fillings still in place. Early morning and late afternoon provide good lighting for seeing and photographing the hoodoos and other unusual sandstone formations in this area. Between these two times of day, I think late afternoon has enough of an advantage to justify sharing this area with quite a few other people. There is a pit toilet and a few picnic tables adjacent to the parking area.
