UTAH – DEAD HORSE POINT STATE PARK

Photo Experience:   The first time I visited Dead Horse Point, I was overwhelmed with the views and the fact that this was a state park (rather than a federal property). I’m still a bit in awe of the place each time I’m privileged to come here. But, after I’ve caught my breath, I get out my camera. A zoom lens on the wide-angle side of the spectrum will serve you well here. There are excellent photo opportunities along the standard viewpoints behind the rock wall at Dead Horse Point Overlook. But, unless you are pressed for time, don’t stop there for long. Wander (albeit carefully, watching your step) along the rim to the west, for other perspectives of the Colorado River, 2,000 feet below. Morning to early afternoon will provide the best light. Also, I found that a few puffy clouds will help add interest to the sky.

Other Info:   There is an admission fee – $10.00 per vehicle when I visited. (Major credit cards are accepted.) There are restrooms at the Visitor Center. There is a picnic area, just before the Overlook, which I would encourage you to use. Having lunch in the midst of such beauty is an exceptional experience: I didn’t know whether to take a sip of my Diet Pepsi or drink in the scenery. There is a 21-site campground within the Park. The nearest motels are in Moab, 32 miles away.
