FL – MARCO ISLAND – Tigertail Beach County Park

Location: FL  –  MARCO ISLAND  – Tigertail Beach County Park
Directions: Tigertail Beach is actually a Collier County Park. After getting onto Marco Island, turn right onto Tigertail Dr. Then turn left onto Hernando Ct. This street will take you to the entrance station for the park.
Notes: (1) These directions assume you are coming into Marco Island from the north on SR 951 (Collier Blvd, which is Exit 101 on I-75). (2) The people at the Chamber of Commerce were very helpful with maps and info.
Misc. Info: Entrance fee: $8.00/vehicle. There are restrooms in a building near the entrance station. Take and use a hat, sunscreen, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
Date of Visit: Mid January 2013
Conditions: What began as a chilly, overcast morning turned into full sun
Time of day: Morning
Photography: After leaving the parking lot, you will first encounter a lagoon, the size of which will depend on whether the tide is coming in or going out. Here my wife and I found several white ibis that were close enough to photograph. To get to the beach, walk around the lagoon to the left (south). And walk. And walk. When you get to the Gulf, turn right (north). We found a number of photo opportunities along the beach during our three hours or so here including a leopard crab, sand dollars, sea stars, shore birds, an abundance of shells, and one especially tolerant osprey.
