CA – INYO NATIONAL FOREST – Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest

Location: CA – INYO NATIONAL FOREST – Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest
Directions: One-half mile north of Big Pine CA, turn east on CA 168.  Drive 12 miles and then turn left on White Mountain Road.  There is a sign here for Bristlecone Pine Forest.  Drive 10 miles.  (During this part of the drive, I encourage you to stop at Sierra View Vista Point for a sweeping, 180-degree panorama of the eastern Sierra Nevada).  At the end of the 10 miles, turn right into the Schulman Grove Visitor Center.
Misc. Info: I would encourage using sunscreen and a hat in this area as well as taking some water along with you when you are on a trail.  Pit toilets are available at the Schulman Grove Visitor Center.
Date of Visit: Mid June 2013
Conditions: Full sun
Time of day: Morning
Photography: I chose to hike the Discovery Trail, a 1-mile loop, which is the shortest of the three trails in the Schulman Grove area.  The shapes of these ancient trees and the colors of the exposed, weathered wood offered some interesting possibilities.  Along the trail, I also found some Indian Paintbrush (bottom left) and Wild Blue Flax (bottom right) in bloom.
